Romantic Road, Germany Getaway

With my parents in town, the dog's next few days reserved at the pension (kennel), our bags packed, and a phone call made to the Easter Bunny to see if he minded bringing gifts early, we departed Saturday morning to the Romantic Road in Germany. This is basically a scenic route with numerous castles, quaint towns, picturesque villages, beautiful rolling hills, and onion-domed churches along the way. This first stop was the city of Rothenburg, a medieval walled town.

Rick Steves calls this the "king of medieval German cuteness". He says many people have searched for the "untouristy Rothenburg", but in the end, none compare to Rothenburg. We haven't traveled enough to know, but decided to trust his judgments and it delivered for our family! This is the drive up to the city.

We entered through a little bridge like this to find our hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel Schranne which turned out to be exactly like Rothenburg...quaint, cute, and full of charm. K did have issues with the shower and his height, but overcame them by taking a bath the next morning.

After finding our hotel we strolled through the town enjoying ice cream and the sites. Here the kids found an old boarded up well.

K snacked on Schneeballen. We all decided waffles were more our style as these were dry and not sugary enough for our tastebuds. Maybe we should have tried the pink ones with icing (in the window).

Right away Mom and I got the shopping bug and I found a cute purse and she purchased some Birkenstock sandals.

We came across the 13th century Town Hall Tower, the town's tallest building.

The carriage ride took us around town and gave the kids a break from walking, although it still amazes me how strong their little legs are!

A walkway along the outside wall allows people to see what's outside the bricks, which isn't quite as intersting as the inside.
As we sat down to enjoy our German cuisine at the hotel, basquing in the sun, a few flowers intrigued us. We have nicknamed them "carrot flowers", but we still haven't figured out what the true name is.

Fountains adorned with Easter eggs marked the holiday for us as tomorrow would be Easter Sunday. While sitting down for breakfast that next morning, we turned our coffee cups over to find 2 chocolate eggs. The kids thought they had hit the jackpot as K and my mom played a little magic with them for the next hour, strategically placing more eggs (the ones from our coffee cups) under theirs over and over again. How they didn't see us hiding them, I'll never know, but it kept them happy as each time they turned their cups over to find more surprises from the magic Easter Bunny!

My dad might not have had his V8 for this picture, but we're all still smiling in Rothenburg.
